Cruise Ship Outbreak Updates Vessel Sanitation Program

cruise ship norovirus

Seasickness is physical disorientation as a result of conflicting signals received by the brain from different body senses. Our inner ear senses the ship's irregular motion, which our eyes can't see because the floor and walls are stable. Depending on individual balance, our ability to adjust to motions varies, so not everyone experiences seasickness. The CDC advised that those who choose to travel on a cruise should get vaccinated against COVID-19 before their trip and, if eligible, receive a booster dose.

The virus spreads easily and is typically contracted when someone accidentally ingests tiny particles of vomit or feces from someone who is infected with it. The CDC writes that people who are infected "can shed billions of norovirus particles that you can't see without a microscope," and exposure to just a few norovirus particles can make someone sick. In light of these recent developments, it’s imperative to explore and understand the nature of Norovirus — what it is, why it’s a recurring issue aboard cruise ships, and its impact on the cruise industry. This article aims to shed light on these matters, unpacking the complexities of the problem, and highlighting the steps that are being taken to address it.

Norovirus Outbreaks Surge on Cruises: Here's How to Avoid the Bug.

While having the symptoms of norovirus can be uncomfortable, they tend to be very short-lived and something that many people recover from in just a few days with over-the-counter medications. Norovirus is a viral infection that is one of the most common types of gastroenteritis — a condition that causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal upset. It only takes a small number of virus particles for norovirus to spread, which is why norovirus causes so many explosive outbreaks, Ko previously told TODAY.com. Norovirus can also get into food before, during or after preparation, and it's the top germ causing foodborne illness in the U.S., per the CDC.

Why do I only hear about Norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships?

In 2014, the number of reported illness outbreaks on cruise ships was 17. The total number of infected was 3559 (of those 3354 passengers and 205 crew). In 2015, the number of reported illness outbreaks on cruise ships was 23.

cruise ship norovirus

Among those are schools, hospitals, nursing homes, dormitories, prisons, big resorts, bigger passenger ships (including cruise ferries). Norovirus is often branded as "cruise ship virus" simply because on ships health officials are required to report every gastrointestinal illness incident. This means Norovirus outbreaks are reported more quickly on ships than on land. Just for comparison, the virus can afflict as many as 3000 people per day in only one big city, which is about the passenger capacity of a typical modern cruiser.

You can compare the number of reports (CDC and news media sources) and the total number of infected (passengers and crew). Norovirus outbreaks spiked on cruise ships this year, with data showing more outbreaks happened between January and June than over the course of any other full calendar year in the last decade. Thirteen norovirus outbreaks have been reported on cruises so far in 2023, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which keeps a record of annual case counts dating back to 1994.

If you'd like to check out the outbreak information, you can find a detailed list of ships that have had acute gastroenteritis outbreaks (many of which were caused by norovirus), listed by year, about halfway down the CDC's outbreak page. The CDC estimates only about 1% of all annual U.S. norovirus cases happen on cruise ships. The numbers are greatest in nursing homes, hospitals, schools and restaurants, which collectively account for about 91% of cases. Norovirus often isn’t just your typical I’m-feeling-a-little-sick-so-I-may-pass-on-shuffleboard type of gastroenteritis. No, a norovirus infection can consist of projectile vomiting and explosive diarrhea. Similarly, you’ve got to be careful about anything that could explode in your pants.

Outbreaks 2012 reports

If seasickness symptoms are accompanied by diarrhea or fever, passengers should immediately seek medical treatment for Norovirus and avoid spreading the illness to others. The symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, abdominal cramps. The illness lasts 1 to 4 days, but some people (especially elderly) may be contagious for up to 2 weeks after recovery. One month later, a second outbreak occurred on the same cruise ship, which, by that point was carrying different passengers and sailing from Montreal to New York City. At the same time, another ship, also from the same cruise line, also experienced a norovirus outbreak. This ship was sailing along the U.S.’s Eastern Seaboard, leaving from and returning to New York City.

cruise ship norovirus

An MSC Cruises representative told Insider at the time that the cruise line had launched an internal investigation based on the inspector's concerns and taken immediate corrective actions. During COVID, the options for cruises were limited, but now that restrictions have been lifted, more people are deciding to take that cruise they had been putting off. Since many people do not get tested, experts can only estimate how many norovirus cases occur in the U.S. every year. While the virus can affect people in large groups, we are starting to see bigger clusters of individuals getting sick. Hydration is one of the most important things you can do to help prevent dehydration — the biggest complication of this illness.

Beyond that, crewmembers distribute information to passengers onboard offering precautionary tips, as well as a heads-up memo at embarkation to travelers boarding a ship that had previously seen a high percentage of illness. And, as mentioned above, passengers who report symptoms may be quarantined to their cabins. Though generally moderate, symptoms are often flu-like (in fact, Norovirus is often called the "stomach flu," even though it is not related to influenza). Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps; children often vomit more than adults.

Virus particles can contaminate drinking water that isn't treated properly or pools when people poop in the water. Some people are at higher risk of developing severe norovirus symptoms — these include infants, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems, Ostrosky noted. There’s no specific treatment or antiviral for norovirus, according to Ostrosky, but most cases can be managed at home with supportive care like hydration and rest. Sick people should also isolate until their symptoms resolve, the experts emphasize.

Should you be worried about catching norovirus or another gastrointestinal illness when you cruise? The CDC says cruises account for some of the lowest case numbers in the U.S. annually. In a study of acute gastroenteritis cases from 2006 to 2019 (before the cruise industry's COVID-19 shutdown), the CDC found that the number of cases on ships decreased over those 14 years. It also noted that the number of cases tends to be higher on larger ships and on voyages of a week or longer. Mathis says older passengers and others traveling with family face a risk from others in their party. For example, if grandchildren aren’t careful hand-washers, they can easily infect their grandparents and others.

What causes Norovirus on cruise vessels is mainly contaminated food/water. When it comes to ships, it spreads mostly through physical contact with sick people or handling contaminated objects. This includes sharing food/utensils and poor hygiene (not washing hands after bathroom use). The virus also spreads fecally, so you can catch it into the onboard laundry, or while changing diapers, etc. However, many passengers likely can blame a sick crewmember for the virus.

More specifically, it runs the Vessel Sanitation Program, which monitors illness outbreaks on ships carrying more than 13 passengers. Buffet service often switches from "help yourself" to manned stations. Norovirus has been a particular problem of late for cruise ships because passengers and crew typically occupy close -- and closed-in -- quarters, such as casinos, theaters and banquet-style dining rooms. However, Norovirus has been known to close schools, attack college dormitories and even infect a Hollywood Academy Awards party.

The hotel staff is required to implement special cleaning and disinfection procedures for sanitizing the whole ship. To do that, they use stronger solvents, like Microbac, chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide. Sick passengers and crew are quarantined in their rooms, typically for at least 2 days. When Norovirus outbreaks can't be contained, cruise lines might also pull the ship out of service for a few days for sanitizing. There have already been an unlucky 13 recorded norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships under U.S. jurisdiction so far in 2023. That’s the highest tally in 10-years, ever since 16 such outbreaks occurred in 2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vessel Sanitation Program.

The allure of the open sea, captivating itineraries, and the luxurious promise of a carefree escape have long made cruising a popular choice for vacationers. However, this industry’s lustrous appeal has recently been overshadowed by a surge in outbreaks of a particularly stubborn and contagious pathogen — Norovirus. The Vessel Sanitation Program monitors vessel cleanliness, and there is no correlation between scores received and outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness.

Platinums also get complimentary wash-and-fold laundry service (with a limit of two to five bags, depending on the length of the cruise). In other words, if you are sailing seven-night cruises, you will be Gold level on your fourth sailing, as you will be passing the 25-day mark on that sailing. Most vessels have standard North American-style, 110-volt outlets in rooms, as well as European-style, 220-volt outlets.

Carnival has just begun operating its first truly giant ships in years, the 181,808-ton, 5,282-passenger Mardi Gras and the 183,521-ton, 5,374-passenger Carnival Celebration. However, the line's next-biggest vessel, the 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia, measures just 135,225 tons. That's about 40% smaller than the biggest ships operated by Royal Caribbean.

The arrival of Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration over the past two years has marked a major turning point for the line. At around 180,000 tons, they rank at No. 15 and No. 13, respectively, among the world's largest cruise ships — the only Carnival ships to crack the Top 20. One more ship in the series — Carnival Jubilee — will arrive in December 2023. Carnival Spirit sets sail from home ports around the United States to Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and the Panama Canal.

It’s the third name drop by Carnival following the reveal of welcome area Paradise Plaza and adult-friendly area Calypso Lagoon. The final two space names and details, which will be a family-friendly area and an adults-only private area, will be revealed later. As the first Carnival ship to call in the UK in 20 years, guests were happy to travel on the cruise ship during this momentous occasion. Carnival Panorama, the third in the Vista Class, launched at the end of 2019 and was the first new Carnival cruise ship based on the West Coast in two decades. Carnival Destiny was then retrofitted and renamed Carnival Sunshine in 2013 and placed in its own Sunshine Class.

Carnival Liberty

All three of these first Carnival cruise ships left the Carnival fleet between 2001 and 2009. From that point on, the line would continue to custom-build Carnival’s cruise ships, which gradually increased in size. Carnival ships are all about fun, in a lively, let's-not-take-this-too-seriously sort of way. If you're sure Carnival is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. You want someone who understands all the little quirks that are unique to Carnival's cabin categories and, preferably, has done ship inspections to see the cabins firsthand. That said, given the complexity of booking a cruise — there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process; trust us — we recommend you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises.

Most of these six ships (all but Carnival Venezia) have an a la carte barbecue-and-beer joint called Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, too. Carnival vessels based on the East Coast and along the Gulf of Mexico mostly sail to the Caribbean and Bahamas. Some East Coast ships also head to Bermuda, New England and Canada. On the West Coast, sailings to Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska are the norm.

Other popular venues found on some Carnival ships include RedFrog Pub, which serves up Carnival's tasty housemade beers on tap, as well as plenty of other choices. With the latter, you can team up with your friends and family to play giant versions of Connect 4 Basketball or Simon Flash in front of a live audience. Every Carnival ship has one big theater where you'll often find flashy, fast-paced production shows that string together a medley of loosely related tunes. Designed to be quick and digestible, they typically last around 30 minutes and have relatively small casts (just eight on some ships).

If you are unhappy with the service you receive, you can adjust this amount at the Guest Services desk before disembarking. Also, an 18% gratuity is added to bar bills and the cover charge of the Chef's Table. Each group has its own age-appropriate activities ranging from face painting to pirate adventures.

Each of the line's earlier Conquest Class ships has around 50 suites. The oldest Fantasy Class vessels have 28 suites and 26 junior suites. In recent years, Carnival also has deployed two of its vessels to Australia to operate voyages from Sydney and Brisbane. In a departure from Carnival's American-focused business model, the Australia sailings are aimed mostly at the local Australian market, though they are open to American travelers. These comfy rooms with a view let you take in the scenery as you sail toward your beautiful destinations. Design is more than just the way things look — it's as much about how they work.

Grand Celebration Cruise Ship from Bahamas Paradise Cruises

paradise cruise line

Bahamas-only cruises tend to be anywhere from two to five nights, and they visit a port or two in the Bahamas, as well as a private island (see below). The value for the amount you pay for your cruise on Grand Celebration is hard to beat. It is perfect for short getaways, birthdays, anniversaries, bachelor/bachelorette parties etc. Steakhouse/Seafood Restaurant (Admiral’s) – I normally don’t go into much detail about food since it is so subjective.

Adding to the jovial atmosphere is the music playing at the delightful al fresco bars. Let the many invigorating treatments offered at the spa relax your mind, body and soul or get your hair styled at the salon. One thing I liked was after checking in, you can book shore excursions, dinner reservations, and drink packages right in the terminal while you wait for the ship to begin boarding. The cruise is usually around $150 or less for a 2-night/3-day jaunt to the Bahamas.

Dinner only had a few options (pizza, pasta etc) so you will want to eat in the main dining room or specialty restaurant at night. Grand Celebration offers two night cruises to Freeport, Bahamas from West Palm Beach. You can either take the two night cruise, or you can get off the ship when you reach the Bahamas and stay in a resort for a few nights. Once your stay is done at the resort, you take a one night cruise back to West Palm Beach. “Paradise” is more than the name of our ship — it’s a state of mind.

I had a travel agent write to me saying how impressed they were with the ship after following along on my journey. The actual visit to the Bahamas is short—you only have from the time the ship docks in the morning til you have to be back on board again in the afternoon—but sometimes, that’s all you need for a total reset. You’ll sail back into port the next day feeling like you got a nice break from reality for a bit. The Terrace Suites are our most popular staterooms, and it isn’t hard to see why. Privately tucked away on Deck 11, you’ll find only 14 of them four decks above the other staterooms. These suites come in three categories – the Terrace Suites, Deluxe Terrace Suites, and Grand Terrace Suites – all stylishly furnished, boasting ample lounge room, and featuring a scenic balcony.

Grand Celebration itinerary program was based on 2-night / 3-day Bahamas cruises leaving from Palm Beach (Riviera Beach) Florida. The ship offered mini-cruises to Bahamas (Freeport) 3 or 4 times a week. Sadly, in January 2021 the vessel was beached and scrapped at Alang India. In the evenings, Plunge Grill transforms into "Rock Grill" - interactive cooking, alfresco dining experience with full bar service available for dinner on Lido Deck. Passengers can cook their meats tableside on lava rock natural gas mobile grills.

The main draws, however, are the beaches and bright blue waters, which offer plenty of places to snorkel and scuba dive or to work on your tan while sipping a cocktail or two. Their proximity to Florida makes them quick, easy and affordable to reach by ship, whether for a quick overnight trip or a call as part of a longer voyage. Before my cruise, I had someone ask me if I had to attend a timeshare presentation once onboard. Throughout my entire cruise, I didn’t see or hear one thing about timeshares, it was just like every other cruise I’ve taken (just shorter).

With Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line out of West Palm Beach, Florida, you don’t have to. If you have never cruised, there are some things you can reasonably expect on Carnival, Norwegian, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Princess, MSC, and Disney. Having been on all 7, I would expect a certain process at the port and to be well documented with a list of rules and expectations that many guests don’t even bother reading before I head to the port. The Drink Package – typically not something I would use but it was convenient and the pricing was not horrible.

Margaritaville at Sea cruise ship to offer new experiences in June - News-Press

Margaritaville at Sea cruise ship to offer new experiences in June.

Experience international wine tasting on-board with R&B, Blues, Latin and classic rock music at this intimate jazz club. It was not anything close to what I would’ve expected and I would be horrified if I sent a client, a friend, a family member, or even an enemy on this. I felt transported away from the rest of the ship’s environment when we went to dinner and I needed that. In the common areas, there’s a clear scheme to bring it in line with Margaritaville name and vision which surely includes fixtures, furnishings, and signage.

We were surprised to learn on our 2022 sailing that the Margaritaville at Sea appeal goes far beyond Parrotheads, as Jimmy Buffett's fans are called. Nearly 60% of the passengers on a typical Margaritaville at Sea sailing are taking their first cruise ever, we were told, and the vast majority of them have only a passing knowledge of Buffett. We noticed this particularly during the evening show, a jukebox musical of Buffett hits written by Jimmy himself. While some passengers enthusiastically sang along, fins up, other people smiled and tapped their toes, but clearly didn't know the words. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear.

Amenities include a TV, desk, a private bathroom with shower, hair dryer, storage space, and a large window with gorgeous views of the Caribbean Sea. This one will put you over $800 in a guaranteed oceanview cabin for 2 but you also won’t have to purchase a single excursion, get an extra day, and plenty of free dining options to suit most dietary needs. To be honest, I had no idea that this was the last sailing under the Bahamas Paradise brand and I was not even supposed to be on this sailing.

Being able to purchase a 10 drink ticket package for $75 feels very fair for a couple where one might not drink more than 1 or 2 drinks. Some cruises force you to buy a package for every adult in the room which can be costly and unnecessary. The game room above the roped off area of the pool deck also had its own roped off area and half of the games had “needs repair” signs on them.

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line weddings are package deals requiring at least 8 booked staterooms (at double occupancy) accommodating 16 full-paying passengers. For detailed information, and package prices follow the above link. Passengers can sign up for FREE "Par-A-Dice Casino Players Card", which allows collecting and redeeming gaming points. Points can be used toward slots, as well as for onboard dining, shopping, spa treatments, also on shore excursions. The company offers a wide variety of beach activities, land tours/excursions and "cruise and resort" deals in The Bamahas. In March 2023, Margaritaville at Sea introduced the industry's first seasonal pass "Ultimate Paradise Pass".

The new program was introduced on Grand Celebration (Sept 2018) and on Grand Classica (since January 2019). Each cruise passenger can bring (complimentary) 2 pieces of luggage, but not exceeding 50 pounds (22,7 kg) per piece. Overweight luggage is charged USD 25 per bag (automatically charged to onboard accounts). In mid-November 2020 was unofficially announced that the ship Grand Celebration had been sold for scrap metal (for an undisclosed sale price). The vessel left Freeport Bahamas on November 15th, allegedly heading to India's Alang Shipbreaking Yard (world's largest), with estimated arrival on January 3rd, 2021. On January 2nd, the 34-year-old liner arrived and anchored off Alang, and on January 14th was beached for scrapping.

They also offer regular deals and promotions like flash sales (I’ve seen $59 per person, per night!) and even “kids sail free” promos (they have three separate kids clubs onboard). They also offer perks for solo cruisers, so don’t write off the cruise if you can’t find a travel buddy or if you just need a little “me” time. Grand Celebration is perfect for short and popular getaway sailings. Delicious culinary offerings at a variety of dining venues are sure to keep your taste buds satisfied, including a beautiful main restaurant serving all your favorites.

Alaska Cruises: Cruise to Alaska

alaska cruise in august

If you're on a budget, stick to interior rooms and look for the big cruise ships, which tend to have more inventory. Summer Alaska cruises fill up quickly, so always book well in advance. You will find local asparagus on some menus in southeast towns later in the month, and fiddlehead season also begins in Alaska in May. However, most of Alaska's tastiest fruits and vegetables aren't on offer until later in the summer. Alaska has a deep, rich culture that blends North American pioneer traditions with those of its native peoples. You’ll find cultural iconography and influence from the Iñupiat, Yupik, Aleut, Eyak, and other native tribes in different ports.

Alaska Cruise Itineraries

Gray whales and Humpback whales begin their migration to warmer waters in October and November, so you still have a chance to see them in Alaskan waters in September. There is a chance you will see some snow, so a winter coat, gloves, and a hat are a smart addition to your packing list. You might see bears that are continuing to fatten up before hibernation.

Complete Your Adventure

Near the very end of the Turnagain Arm Waterway, along the scenic Seward Highway, this center provides a sanctuary for native Alaskan animals in need. Here you can get up close to the orphaned, injured or displaced animals, all under expert care in their natural habitats so that they can be reintroduced into the wild. The resident population varies by the season but can include caribou and moose calves, fawns, porcupines, birds, lynx, and brown and black bears.

See the best of the Great Land’s glaciers, coastal towns and wildlife on board perfectly sized ships offering superior service and exclusive programming. For guaranteed bear viewing, head to the Fortress of the Bear near Sitka, which raises orphaned bears in a natural setting. Vast, creaking blue-white glaciers inch their way to the sea as jagged, snow-capped mountain peaks pierce the sky. Bears prowl rock-strewn beaches, while salmon-laden rivers rush through pristine, old-growth forest, bald eagles perched watchfully in the treetops.

While home to just 32,000, Fairbanks is the big city of the interior and cultural hub for the sparsely populated region. You can still go for the gold in Fairbanks, panning just like the early prospectors did. Popular destinations include Denali National Park (for wildlife viewing) or Talkeetna (best place for Denali views and cool eats). Cruise tour land packages are also available to spots like Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula and Canada's Yukon Territory. On either end of your sailing, you can tour on your own or book a cruise tour that combines a cruise and a land tour, which usually runs three to seven nights. You’ll want to carefully consider Alaska cruise packages and itineraries as the scenery, price and length of time all vary considerably.

Alaska Food: Where to Find the Best Food in Alaska Royal Caribbean Cruises

Alternatively, Inside Passage cruises in Alaska tend to be calmer as the waters are protected. Temperatures in Alaska can change considerably from one destination to the next. That includes warm days, where even being near a glacier or a passing cloud (or socked-in rain) can make things chilly. While you might not be sunning yourself to a stunning shade of bronze on an Alaska cruise, you and everyone on board will want to take in the scenery. That makes having your own balcony a prime piece of real estate, especially near Denali National Park, portions of the Inside Passage or Tracy Arm Fjord. One-way Gulf of Alaska itineraries are the best option for Alaska touring, as they begin or end in Alaska.

Glacier Bay National Park

An Alaska Inside Passage cruise typically lasts seven nights, embarking and returning to Seattle or Vancouver. It's one of the most popular and common itineraries for Alaska cruising. An Alaska cruise costs anywhere from $500 to $8,000 or more during high season. Cheaper fares can be usually found on mainstream lines like Royal Caribbean and NCL, while Cunard, Disney and Seabourn will be more expensive. Ketchikan, Alaska is one of the best spots along Alaska's Inside Passage to explore the rich cultural sights of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. Amble historic Creek Street, a boardwalk over a wide creek that fills with salmon during certain times of year.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Alaska Cruises Insider

But summer weather allows for outdoor activities without wearing heavy clothing. June is one of the best months for wildlife sightings, with caribou, black bears, mountain goats, moose calves, and even polar bears out and about. The warm weather makes it one of the best times to witness the calving of glaciers. May is one of the best times to visit Alaska for dry weather, fewer crowds, and lots of wildlife. We’ve put together this Alaska cruise weather guide to help you find the best time to cruise to Alaska. You’re not alone if you’re worried about how cold it gets in Alaska or which month is best to avoid the rain.

July and August are prime time for viewing glacier calving on an Alaskan cruise. In August, the wildlife can sense that winter is on its way, and activity picks up to prepare for the months of cold, snow, and darkness. That being said, the weather and wildlife in Alaska are notoriously unpredictable.

The best Alaska cruises manage to combine epic nature with local flavor, and the following options all offer that mix with some variation. If you're happy with a couple of historic tours and a guided hike, you could likely budget $500 or less per person for shore excursions in Alaska. But if once-in-a-lifetime Alaska experiences like helicopter rides and flightseeing in Ketchikan are more your speed, you'll need to triple that amount -- or more. Most of Celebrity’s Alaska cruises sail round-trip from either Vancouver or Seattle.

They are generally visible across the state, so any itinerary will likely do, though you'll have the best show in less populated areas like Denali National Park. You'd also do well to look at the moon cycles, as a full moon can drown out the Aurora Borealis. May is one of the driest months in the Inside Passage, but you may still find snow on the ground (which is great for scenic photos, but less ideal for hiking). Our Alaska cruise departure ports have big personalities and loads of attractions. An elegant and spacious Alaska cruise ship with fresh floral arrangements and garden-inspired décor.

They are quite an awe-inspiring sight to see as they travel in pods, breech, and feed. You’ve got about a 50/50 chance of getting rained or snowed on during excursions. You’ll be very happy if you purchase a quality raincoat and pack clothing you can add or remove in layers. On Winter Solstice (December 21 or 22), the state breaks out of its winter hibernation and begins gaining a few minutes of sunlight each day. By the time Summer Solstice occurs (June 20,21, or 22), travelers to Juneau, Alaska, a common port, will experience a day with 19 hours of sunlight.

If you want to spot herds of caribou, book an Alaska cruise that puts you in range of Denali National Park. And with salmon runs in full force, you can catch fishing bears in the southeast. Even if you're a seasoned fisherman, we recommend using a local guide to help find you the best fishing spot. On dry land, bears are more common in May, though not as frequently spotted as they are in peak summer. Alternatively, birders might want to time their cruise with the Copper River Shorebird Festival, which takes place early in May in Cordova. Check ahead to make sure your itinerary will stop here, as it's usually only featured on longer 14-day cruises to Alaska.
